Kelverion, a leader in IT automation solutions, releases Runbook Studio v5.7 to support Microsoft’s updated Azure Automation platform.

Runbook Studio v5.7 and Azure Automation

Over the last few months, Microsoft has been performing rolling updates to the Azure Automation environments to support the future needs of Graphical Authoring. They refer to this refresh as the Hyper-V Isolation environment, and it will lead to a more robust experience for Azure Automation, including improved module support in your runbooks.

Kelverion has worked closely with Microsoft during their validation of these changes to our Automation accounts, and we have identified that Azure Automation Graphical runbooks that use the following activities directly on the runbook canvas may no longer execute.

  • Get-AutomationCertificate
  • Get-AutomationConnection
  • Get-AutomationPSCredential
  • Get-AutomationVariable

Our development team has made some updates in the Runbook Studio, which means that Kelverion customers using the Runbook Studio will be able to mitigate the issue.  The resolution is included within the latest version of the Runbook Studio.  After you have updated the Runbook Studio, simply download and republish your runbooks for the fix to be applied.

Microsoft are actively staging the changes to the automation environments for all runbooks that execute in native Azure sandboxes, so we encourage customers to upgrade and update their runbooks in a managed way rather than be adversely impacted, in the very specific circumstances described.

In addition to this issue, Basic and Detailed runbook logging is currently disabled in the upgraded environments. Microsoft is working on a resolution to this, and they understand the impact this can have for troubleshooting runbooks.

Runbook executions on Hybrid workers are unaffected by these changes, so a simple workaround for affected runbooks is to execute in a hybrid worker group where that is feasible.

Alternatively, if you have our runbook support service, please talk to us about our runbook logging best practices that can also mitigate the logging changes.

If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact your Kelverion Account Manager or email info@kelverion.com.
