Support and Release Timeline Revealed
As providers of Microsoft System Center Automation solutions, one of the most common questions we get when talking to customers about System Center is ‘what is the future of System Center?’ closely followed by ‘how long will it be supported for?’
Understandably as with all software the concern is that the investment made into System Center integration will be wasted due to short term support or a short product life cycle. Thankfully the support available has always been long dated and the current version, System Center 2016, will be supported until 2021 with extended support adding another 5 years on to this date.
We can now however, finally, answer beyond that and give an insight into what is to come in the years ahead…
Microsoft have published a roadmap for System Center, with a System Center 2019 release in Q1 2019 as their next long-term release – apart from support for Windows Server 2019 details are sketchy at present (we will get them at Ignite 2018 no doubt, and we’ll be sure to feedback) but they have confirmed it will be a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release and Microsoft will provide 5 years of mainstream support (until 2024) followed by 5 more years of extended support until 2029.
So, System Center is certainly not end of life anytime soon and Microsoft are still investing.

Microsoft have also rolled out their second semi-annual release of System Center called 1807, customers who have taken Software Assurance have the option of getting upgrades at a faster pace via these semi-annual releases but each of these releases are only supported for 18 months so you have to follow the upgrade cycle to maintain support.
